Every organization follows a hierarchy where all the employees are those who can work hard to fulfill their duties by achieving the organizational goals and missions (Hajiali, et al., 2022). A leader who works hard to perform the various roles and responsibilities with a commitment to desired outcomes A leader is a role model who has certain qualities, such as ensuring that everyone in the team feels heard and understood, undertaking the diligence that is required for the task, having the ability to make critical decisions without hesitation, and taking risks when it comes to making the right decisions for the organization that benefit the organization as well as the team. This assessment aims to provide a self-evaluation that can help identify my leadership qualities, the ethical dilemmas that I have faced, and how I have overcome and learned from them.
Section 1: Leadership and Collaboration Qualities in a Leadership Role
Leadership Qualities and Actions
In 2022, I completed my six years working as a registered nurse in the NewYork clinic for the elderly population. I have been working here for the past 6 years and have recently gotten the opportunity to lead the facilities with 50 beds and 30 nurses and assistant nurses. My responsibility as a chief nurse is to manage the whole facility while catering to issues such as staffing and turnover issues, patient and quality of care issues, policy and insurance issues, and collaboration with other health professionals and the managers in line of concern.
Furthermore, I have recently taken on administrative duties such as looking at admission, insurance coverage, financial disposal, and allocation of resources. Along with these roles, I have the major responsibility of leading the whole facility, which includes providing support to my team where it is required, advocating for and helping my team, helping patients and ensuring that they receive quality care, and making sure that the patients and their families feel heard and valued while being educated regarding the treatments.
Also, I have the responsibility of boosting my team’s morale, ensuring that my team feels heard and respected, helping them through conflicting situations, and encouraging their productivity. The organization is envisioned to provide effective and quality care along with the best practices that could be taken into account and to improve healthcare outcomes while having a trained and competent team by my side that can help me achieve and standardize the aimed priorities and goals of the organization.
Leadership and motivational techniques
Being a chief nurse comes with a lot of responsibilities and critical situations that require attention and proper handling. My go-to leadership style is a blend of authoritative, democratic, and transformational leadership styles. The aim of using a blend of so many leadership styles is to be situationally appropriate and to make sure that I have the right strategy to deal with the situation (Hussain, et al., 2017). There have been situations where I have had to engage my team members to pursue shared goals, such as quality of care concerns, so my approach to motivation and leadership was transformational.
In situations where I have to provide leadership to my team, such as changes within the setup, my go-to approach is democratic. However, for financial and resource allocation, my approach is more authoritative. Thus, having a flexible leadership style gives me more space to understand and change as per my responsibilities. Also, another asset that provides me assistance in motivating my team is effective and active communication. My ability to actively communicate, address, and identify concerns allows me to become more vigilant and active.
However, the collaboration between the chief nurse and the staff is one of the most significant interprofessional exchanges that are necessary for the organization to work effectively. Interprofessional collaboration and teamwork allow leaders to improve their abilities and quality of care. This collaboration aims to motivate the nurses to improve their performance levels. As a chief nurse, my job is to ensure my team’s goals are aligned with the objectives of the organization. The collaboration aims to provide direction to the team while enabling them to work effectively with other professionals.
Additionally, I took steps to arrange weekly meetings with other stakeholders to establish communication among the staff by keeping everyone in the loop so that effective and better-quality care is being provided to the facility. For the patient, I have made sure that they have ways to discuss or openly raise their concerns within the facilities. thus fostering a culture of effect
